Large-Scale Photobioreactors

PSI Large-Scale Photobioreactors are systems that create an artificial environment for large-scale growing and harvesting of photosynthetic organisms, mostly algae. They are manufactured as modular systems that enable the customers to build their own cultivating apparatus according to their individual experimental needs.

PSI Photobioreactors feature a unique combination of the cultivator and monitoring device with user-friendly software control which offers remote control via internet. The core of the Photobioreactor system is a flat cultivation tank (120 L or 25 L in volume) with integrated temperature regulation in the range of 15 - 60 °C and bubble stirring (aeration) of the culture. Cultivation tanks may be built as modular systems containing number of optional modules and may be cascaded to increase the total volume up to 1000 L.

The modular Photobioreactors are designed to allow for precise control and optimization of the cultivation conditions by continuous monitoring of fluorescence parameters, photosynthetic efficiency, optical density of the culture and pH of the suspension for determining CO2 injection. The Photobioreactors assure control and monitoring of numerous parameters essential for successful culture cultivation and maximum production of biomass such as stable suspension temperature, homogenous light illumination and light spectral distribution. Photobioreactor function may also be enhanced by the two gas modules: Gas Mixing System GMS 150 providing optimal control of input gas concentration and composition; and Gas Analyzing Systems GAS 150 measuring CO2 concentration at the Photobioreactor output.

Illumination Module for 120 L Photobioreactor
Bi-color, white-red, LED-based panel controllable in intensity, timing and modulation. Maximum intensity up to 700 µmol(photon)/m2.s (500 µmol(photon)/m2.s white, 200 µmol(photon)/m2.s red).


Illumination Module for 25 L Photobioreactor (standard)
Bi-color, white-red, LED-based panel controllable in intensity, timing and modulation. Maximum intensity up to 700 µmol(photon)/m2.s (500 µmol(photon)/m2.s white, 200 µmol(photon)/m2.s red).


Enhanced Illumination Module for 25 L Photobioreactor
Bi-color, white-red, LED-based panel controllable in intensity, timing and modulation. Maximum intensity up to 2,000 µmol(photon)/m2.s (total for both colors).


Electrode Module
Enables connecting up to four measuring sensors to the Photobioreactor. Standard sensors: pH/T, dO2, CO2. Sensors are not included in the price of the Electrode Module; cable is included for each purchased sensor.


pH/T Sensor
Supplementary sensor for measuring pH in the cultivated suspension (without cable).


Optical dO2Sensor
Supplementary sensor for measuring dissolved oxygen (without cable). Included is also calibration kit.


CO2 Sensor
Supplementary CO2 sensor for measuring dissolved carbon dioxide (without cable).

Optical Module
Includes a PAM fluorometer for measuring fluorescence parameters (Ft and QY) as well as turbidometer for measuring optical density at 680 nm and 720 nm.


Turbidostat Module
Enables continuous cultivation of the culture (growth-associated parameters may be optical density or measured fluorescence). Includes one pump with needed accessories and software support.


Chemostat Module / pHstat Module
Includes two Peristaltic Pumps PP 500 and software support. One pump serves adding acid, the second pump adds base. The pumps may be controlled manually or by the software.


Cooling Module
Enables widening the range of temperature for cultivation to 15-60 °C (ambient temperature not exceeding 30 °C).


Additional Protective Glasses
Radiation safety glasses protecting against excessive LED radiation – equipped with side cover and protective filters. One pair of glasses is provided with the device free of charge.


Control Unit with a Storing Rack *
Includes a PC with ADVANCED version software for control of the Photobioreactor and all its accessories as well as data collection and visualization. Included are also storing rack and separate touch screen positioned on the rack door.


High-Precision Gas Mixing System GMS 150
The standard version GMS 150 includes two channels (channel 1 for Air-N2; channel 2 for CO2). Preferably it is intended for use with PSI Multi-Cultivators, small-volume Photobioreactors, large-volume Photobioreactors and Growth Chambers. High-precision GMS 150 can optionally hold up to four channels.

Other Photobioreactors

Photobioreactor FMT 150

Photobioreactors FMT 150/400 and FMT 150/1000 feature a unique combination of the cultivator and computer controlled monitoring device. FMT 150/400 and FMT 150/1000 differ in the capacity of their cultivation vessels - 400 ml and 1000 ml respectively. Both Photobioreactor models may be supplied with a number of useful accessories - sensors, stirrers, pumps, etc.


Multi-Cultivator MC 1000

Multi-Cultivator MC 1000 serves for small scale cultivation of algae, bacteria or cyanobacteria. The instrument represents a perfect solution in applications requiring diverse experimental variants. In an ideal configuration, the high-throughput part of the experiments is performed in the MC 1000 and the results are finalized in our FMT 150.


Large-Scale Photobioreactors

Large-volume bioreactors are manufactured with respect to customer's specific needs and they come with a number of useful accessories. Two basic versions feature:
